Chilean President Sebastian Pinera will meet Pope Francis in Rome later this month during a tour of Europe, as the Roman Catholic Church in Chile faces a crisis over claims of sexual abuse and cover-ups.
Brazil's former Minister of Defense and Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, met with Pope Francis in the Vatican early Thursday to discuss the imprisonment of former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He was accompanied by Argentina's former Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers Alberto Fernandez and Chile's former Minister of State Carlos Ominami.
Rome, May 18 (Prensa Latina) All 34 Chilean bishops who participated in the reflection with Pope Francis about abuses submitted their resignations in writing so that the Holy Pontiff can decide freely what to do with them, representatives of the groups said here today.
VATICAN, May 15, 2018 - Pope Francis began a three-day, closed-door meeting today with 34 Chilean bishops who have been summoned to the Vatican over their possible involvement in a sexual abuse cover-up that dates to the 1970s. It's expected that some of the present bishops will resign or be expunged from the Catholic church.
