JAMAICA | UAWU attributes Government's unfavourable rating to tax package -

The University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU) feels that that the Government's unfavourable rating in the latest RJRGleaner Group Don Anderson poll could be due to last year's tax package.

Seventeen per cent of the 1,070 people polled said the government's performance has been 'very poor' while 21 per cent said it was 'poor'.

In contrast, 14 per cent said the government's performance was 'good' and 12 per cent said it was 'very good'. Thirty six per cent of the respondents gave the government an 'average' rating.

In an interview with RJR News, First-Vice President of the UAWU Clifton Grant, argued that some persons are not benefiting from the Government's economic policy.

"Overall, the cost of living is really having a major impact on the lives of people in all different aspects and if that is not addressed, then I don't see where the government can expect the people to see them in a positive light and the poll is reflecting it," he asserted.

"It is reflecting what I am feeling on the ground as a union rep; how the workers are really reacting to the impact of the prices of goods and services on the ground overall," he added.

Mr. Grant said it is evident that the government's performance rating is in line with the results of the RJRGleaner Group Don Anderson poll on the direction in which the country is going.

Fifty-five per cent of those polled said the country was going in the wrong direction, 11 per cent said they were not sure or did not know and 34 per cent said the country was going in the right direction.
