Australian Deputy PM Resigns Over Extramarital Affair

Canberra, Feb 22 (Prensa Latina) Australian Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has resigned today to the presidency of the National Party, which is part of the ruling coalition, when it was made public he was expecting a child with his former staffer.
Joyce, who has campaigned on family values, had an extramarital affair with Vikki Campion, a former staffer, and was called to step down when the affair was made public, Andrew Broad, legislator of that party, told state-owned broadcaster the ABC.

Two-thirds of voters want Joyce to resign over the affair, Newspoll newspaper reported.

Canberra's Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull reproached Joyce last week for the lack of opinion that affected his family and Campion, after he refused to resign during a news conference and accused Turnbull of interfering in the internal affairs of the National Party.

Although Turnbull acknowledged he had no power to revoke Joyce's position, he said he would establish a formal ban on relationships between ministers and staff in the ministerial code of conduct.
