More Than 21,000 Cameroonians Took Refuge in Nigeria

Abuja, May 24 (Prensa Latina) The number of Cameroonian refugees in Nigeria rose to 21,291, the UNHCR and the National Commission for refugees, migrants and internally displaced persons confirmed today.

According to Thursday's newspaper This Day, this is the official figure since October, when the Francophone and Anglophone crisis began in the neighboring country of Central Africa.

The count showed that children and women make up approximately 77 percent of those sheltered.

In a press release, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) indicated that emigrants were living in 40 different locations in four states of Nigeria (Cross River, Benue, Akwa Ibom and Taraba).

We want to ensure that Cameroonians live in conditions of security and with respect to the international humanitarian norm that refugees must remain at least 50 kilometers from the borders, said the note.

The statement added that together with the Government and the Nigerian authorities it is about finding creative ways to address the current situation of expatriates in a more sustainable way.
