UN says new direct funding available for Caribbean countries to regulate tobacco

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 13, CMC – The United Nations says new funding is now available to support tobacco control implementation for low and middle income countries, such as those in the Caribbean, through the  World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) -currently the strongest global instrument to control tobacco.

UN Accepts Petition Stating Brazil Judge Violated Lula's Rights

The United Nations has accepted a petition from lawyers of former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, claiming that the judge overseeing the Petrobras corruption case had violated Lula da Silva’s rights by charging him with the same allegations several times and detaining him arbitrarily without any evidence.

UN Secretary General wants UNGA to ‘fulfil moral duty’ to assist Haiti

UN to deliver food for 180,000 people in eastern Cuba

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 13, CMC – The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) says it is working with the Cuban Government to provide food for 180,000 people in hard-hit eastern areas of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean island as they cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.

Caribbean leaders, at UN Assembly, decry new financial rules; stress UN role in development

26 September 2016 – Declaring that Caribbean countries are being treated “as if they are hell on earth” due to new financial rules against tax havens, Bahamian Foreign Minister Frederick Mitchell mounted the podium of the United Nations General Assembly today to denounce the “immoral” withdrawal of normal banking services that inflict hardship on ordinary citizens.
