Antigua Thanks Cuba, Venezuela and CARICOM for their Aid

Saint John''s, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Antigua and Barbuda''s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, expressed his deepest gratitude to Cuba, Venezuela and the members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) for the fast assistance given to his country due to Hurricane Irma.
The Minister of Finances also highlighted those States during a speech before the House of Representatives for the presentation of the 2018 budget, with a strong emphasis on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Barbuda, devastated by the natural phenomenon last September.

'I want to make a special mention to the governments and peoples of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the Republic of Cuba and the brother countries of CARICOM that were among the first to respond' to assist Barbuda after the passage of the meteor, the Prime Minister said.

The category 5 hurricane (the maximum on the Saffir Simpson scale) and considered the strongest in the history of the region, caused the destruction of 90 % of the national infrastructure.

International experts estimate that the reconstruction of the Caribbean island will cost about 600 million dollars, equivalent to 95 % of the income obtained by the country for taxes, the Prime Minister revealed.

Browne also referred to the financial assistance provided by Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Venezuela, China, Japan, India, Qatar and Russia, as well as some institutions such as the Caribbean Development Bank and the International Red Cross.

My government has no fear. We are determined to rebuild a better Barbuda and for the sake and benefit of its inhabitants, the economic sustainability of the island and the resilience to future hurricanes, he pointed out.
