The employee has been identified as the hotel’s Maintenance Manager Seduro McIntosh, 26.
He was reportedly working in the boiler room, shortly after 4pm (local time), with four others members of the maintenance team when the boiler pump exploded.
“I am deeply saddened about the unfortunate accident that occurred at the Hotel RIU Reggae, which resulted in several injuries and the loss of a life.
I offer my sincere condolences to the staff of the hotel as they cope with the aftermath of this tragic incident. I also offer my support to the families and friends of the other injured staff members who are all receiving treatment in the hospital,” said Bartlett.
He added that “the Ministry of Tourism will continue to monitor the situation and will be working closely with the hotel to ensure that the grieving families receive the necessary support during this difficult time.”
The Jamaica Fire Brigade has since ordered the hotel closed as it investigates the incident.
Senior Deputy Superintendent at the fire brigade Emeleo Ebanks says it is not known when the investigation is likely to be completed.
The Hotel RIU Reggae, is an adults only property that was officially opened in November of last year at a cost of US $ 60 million.
