SURINAME | Santokhi Replaces Bouterse as new President of Suriname

PARAMARIBO, July 13, 2020 - The Suriname National Assembly today elected the head of the Progressive Reform party, VHP, 61 year old Chandrikapersad Santokhi, as the country's new president while leader of the Abop party Ronnie Brunswijk is the new vice president of Suriname.

SURINAME | Bouterse concedes elections, NDP congratulates political parties and members of new gov’t coalition

PARAMARIBO – June 22, 2020 - Suriname’s president Desi Bouterse has conceded his loss of the May 25 general elections to Chan Santokhi’s VHP and his coalition partners from the smaller parties. On Saturday, his National Democratic Party officially congratulated the political parties that won in the last general elections and will contribute to the formation of the next coalition government.

SURINAME | Santokhi may Extradite Bouterse? Says he was misquoted, demands retraction

PARAMARIBO, June 11, 2020 -  VHP chairman Chandrikapersad Santokhi who is widely expected to be Suriname’s next president, wants Dutch radio station BNR to retract a statement which quoted Santokhi as saying he would not be reluctant to extradite NDP chairman and current president Desi Bouterse to the Netherlands where he was convicted in absentia for cocaine trafficking.
