Arturo Clement, president of SalmonChile, an association that brings together salmon companies, told La Tercera newspaper that this result is a historic maximum and was due to the good price of the product and the increase in production by some 100,000 tons more than in 2017.
This sector has been gaining space in the Chilean economy in the last ten years to the privileged place it has today, displacing the fruit sector to third place in sales abroad.
This trend will continue, said the manager, as the demand for salmon in the world grows around seven percent per year.
Clement pointed out that an important part of the growth of demand is due to the strong work that companies have done to position Chilean salmon in the United States and China, and warned that we must closely monitor the Asian market, which has grown enormously and has great potential.
SalmonChile groups the 18 companies dedicated to this activity in the country, among which the largest is Los Fiordos, belonging to the Agrosuper group, which contributes 24 percent of the national production and is the second largest in the world, La Tercera says.
