CUBA | New US Sanctions to close 400 Western Unions in Cuba

Featured CUBA | New US Sanctions to close 400 Western Unions in Cuba
HAVANA,  Cuba, October 20, 2020 - Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez has confirmed that over four hundred Western Union offices in Cuba will close their doors within thirty days due to new economic embargo regulations against the Cuban government imposed by the Trump administration.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration published new economic sanctions which prohibit the participation of companies controlled by the Cuban military in the processing of remittances.

In a statement, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the measure seeks to cut the Cuban military out of the business and cut off funds that flow to Cuban security agencies accused of human rights violations in Cuba and Venezuela.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez lamented that the strengthening of the blockade by the United States against Cuba particularly within the contest of the COVID-19 pandemic shows its contempt for the Caribbean people.
