BARBADOS | Errol Walton Barrow, Champion of the Caribbean Community

BRIDGETOWN,  Barbados, January 17, 2023 - On the 21st of January 2023, Barbarians will celebrate the 103rd anniversary of the birth of the Rt. Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, the first prime minister of Barbados.

A publication put out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has positioned the Barbadian National Hero as a champion of the Caribbean Community.

Born on January 21 1920, Barrow was the son of Bishop Reginald Barrow and the nephew of the Right Excellent Dr Charles Duncan O’Neal, the great socialist.

From a very young age he must therefore have imbibed the great socialist principles, and, most importantly, the principle of identity with the interest of the working people, the variety and diversity of the Caribbean region and the specialness of being a Caribbean person, reasoned Ambassador David Comissiong in his forward to the publication.

His exposure to Marcus Mosiah Garvey in 1937 when he made a speech at the Steel Shed and his experience of the people's uprising  of that same year, which played a large role in creating the new Barbados.

No doubt these experiences must have opened his eyes to the need for change in Barbados and to the possibilities of the new society that he was to play so large a part in building later on, Ambassador Comissiong observed.

The following is the publication put out by the Barbados Ministry of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the life and work of the Rt. Excellent Errol Walton Barrow:
