GEORGETOWN, Guyana, September 10, 2021 - Guyana’s Acting Opposition Leader Roysdale Forde, says the country’s health sector is nearing collapse, in a state of crisis and ruin, and underlines the failure of the installed government’s ad hoc plan to combat the spread of COVID and reduce its impact on our population.

At a press conference this afternoon Mr. Forde  said “we, in the APNU+AFC Coalition, are deeply worried about the state of health care in Guyana and the arrogant, uncaring and reckless approach being taken by the PPP regime.”

The press conference was called to highlight the circumstances surrounding the  what the opposition said was the totally avoidable death of Ms. Vanessa Maynard, a mother and a nurse at the COVID Hospital at Liliendaal on the 9th of September.

“We call for a full independent investigation into the death of Nurse Maynard and for her family and relatives to receive the justice they deserve,” the acting Opposition Leader said.

The Acting Opposition Leader pointed out that “this situation puts the lives, health and wellbeing of ordinary Guyanese in jeopardy and peril. They have lost all confidence in the health care sector and in the minister and the PPP regime.”

He saluted the hard working nurses and doctors and all health care workers who are valiantly working tirelessly and long hours in the most difficult and sometimes inhumane circumstances to care for patients.”

Forde, who is also shadow Attorney General, called for the health workers to be provided with the support, equipment and medicine they need to deliver an acceptable level of health care to the nation during this time of the pandemic.

The Opposition also asked that all healthcare workers be provided with a monthly cash transfer in the sum of at least $75,000 during this period of the pandemic to assist them in easing the additional and considerable burdens of their jobs.

The Opposition once again, called on the ruling  PPP regime to stop, take stock and change course. “There needs to be an inclusive national approach to the fight against COVID. Continued insularity and an exclusionary approach will only result in more cases and more deaths,” Forde lamented.

Shadow Attorney General Forde told the news conference that, based on the accounts by Nurse Maynard’s relatives, the COVID Hospital is “nothing more than a hell-hole.” “The revelations are disturbing, they are horrendous. They are indicative of the collapse of the entire healthcare system in this country,” he said, adding that the President, Health Minister and the entire government are responsible for Nurse Maynard’s death.

He reiterated his call for a full independent investigation into the death of Nurse Maynard and for her family and relatives to receive the justice they deserve.
