GUYANA | Opposition Member of Parliament Annette Ferguson charged for cybercrime

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, July 18, 2021 - Opposition Member of Parliament Annette Ferguson has been charged by the state, for allegedly using a computer to humiliate someone.

Ferguson  appeared in Court on Friday where she entered a plea of not guilty to the charge that she used a computer system on the 15th June, 2021 to humiliate Colonel Omar Khan of the Guyana Defence Force.

The GDF Officer is alleging that Ferguson shared a post about an alleged “killing squad” which linked him to the squad. The post, he complained, caused him embarrassment.

However,  The Opposition member of parliament denied the accusations, and was granted bail on her own recognizance.

She said she is confident of being vindicated in the Court matter and she believes the charge against her is political in nature.

A report by News Source Guyana quotes Ferguson as saying “she is concerned that the Government appears to be going after its critics with the Cyber Crime law in an effort to silence them.”

A few months ago, Ferguson won a libel suit against Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who has since appealed the matter.
