'Palestinian State is a condition for peace,' says President Abbas

Ramallah, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) Palestinian Authority (PA)'s President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated on Tuesday that peace in the Middle East region will be possible only when the Israeli occupation ends and Arab people achieve their independence in a sovereign State.

'There will be no peace, security and stability in our region without ending the Israeli occupation, without the Palestinian people obtaining their freedom and independence in a sovereign State with pre-1967 borders,' insisted the leader, cited by the Wafa news agency.

In a meeting with the UK Foreign Minister Dominic Raab, Abbas denounced that Israel controls East Jerusalem, continues to expand its illegal settlements in the West Bank, without completely dismissing its annexation plans.

Such practices will destroy any prospect, the remainder of the political process to end the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the PA president added.

Achieving detente will depend on the application of internationally endorsed resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative (API), he noted.

'This means that a peace agreement must be signed with the Palestinians before the members of that community agree to normalize relations with Israel,' said Abbas, clearly alluding to the recent deal between Tel Aviv and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
