JAMAICA | 30 years after the act, 72 year-old man convicted of carnal abuse

KINGSTON, April 15, 2023 - Thirty years after he sexually assaulted a female relative, a 72 year-old man was on Friday sentenced to nearly five years imprisonment in the St Mary Circuit Court. He was charged with two counts of carnal abuse

The convict was sentenced to four years and eleven months at hard labour on the first count and two years and eleven months on the second count.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

A media release from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions said the man pleaded not guilty to the offence on March 28, but three days later he was convicted by a seven-member jury.

The first incident occurred in 1993 when the complainant was seven years old and was staying with her grandmother while her mother was at work.

The man again assaulted the child in 1999 when she and two minor relatives went to his house.

The complainant first reported the matter in 2013 at the age of 27.

The woman, who is now 36, gave evidence that she took action when she became aware that she could still report the crime, notwithstanding the time which had passed.

She said she had been previously urged by relatives not to report the incidents.
