He said the investigation should not be viewed as a witch hunt, but a necessary process towards a fulsome understanding of the issues surrounding the situation affecting staff and patients at the western health facility.
Dr. Phillips toured the hospital last week with a top level team from the Party, including the Shadow Minister of Health, Dr. Dayton Campbell, Western Westmoreland’s Member of Parliament Dr. Wykeham McNeil, and the People’s National Party’s chairman Mr. Fitz Jackson, M.P.
The team got a firsthand view of the deplorable conditions which have been left to fester for over a year, despite a February 2016 recommendation from the health ministry's technical staff to evacuate that section of the facility.
Following the tour, Dr. Phillips called for an inquiry into the conditions at the hospital and for the investigating body to be comprised persons being named by independent bodies within the medical profession.
Before a gathering of Party supporters in Brandon Hill Division in West Rural St. Andrew Sunday night, where Attorney-at-Law Jennifer Housen was presented as the PNP candidate in the constituency, Dr. Phillips blasted Tufton for responding and acting as though the inquiry would be a witch hunt.
“It cannot be a witch hunt to find out how many Jamaican nurses have been affected by the situation at the Cornwall Regional Hospital; it cannot be a witch hunt to find out if their families and children have been affected; it cannot be a witch hunt to find out what is wrong with the building. We need to know,” he said.
He said the Ministry has been less than honest about what is really going on at the hospital. “Every day they tell us that it is alright and then there is something else. People need the assurance that when they say it is fixed, it is actually fixed,” the Party president said.
