GEORGETOWN, Guyana, October 10, 2020 - A demand by the Guyana police to further question the Chair of the Opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Party, Volda Lawrence, has been characterised by the APNU/AFC Coalition as an intensification of psychological terrorism on the leadership of the Coalition by the PPP regime and have threatened to retaliate if this persists.

The Guyana Criminal Investigation Department has summoned the PNCR Chairman to appear at its offices for questioning next Monday at 10 AM, the opposition coalition said Saturday in a statement.

Initially, Lawrence was summoned by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Guyana Police Force and told to present herself at 16:15hrs today, Saturday, at the CID Headquarters, Eve Leary. But a Coalition spokesman said the date was changed.

The coalition condemned the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) for using the police force to unleash psychological warfare against the opposition.

“Today there has been an unmistakable further intensification of the psychological terrorism on the leadership of the APNU+AFC Coalition by the PPP regime and their complicit agents in the Guyana Police Force,” the coalition said.

Ms. Lawrence is currently before the court facing an election-related charge along with Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo. She is currently on bail.

The APNU+AFC Coalition has demanded that the PPP immediately desist from these actions or suffer the consequences of retaliatory measures which the APNU+AFC Coalition will be left with no alternative but to pursue.

Only last week, the Deputy Chief Election Officer of the Guyana Election Commission Roxanne Myers who was asked to presented herself to the police in a similar manner, was been detained for 72 hours before she was on Friday charged with two counts of misconduct in public office and granted $300,000 bail.

Also arrested by the PPP regime in a similar manner have been the Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield; Personal Assistant to the Chief Elections Officer, Duarte Hetsberger; Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo; Information Technology Officer Enrique Livan and Registration Officer Shefern February. Registration officer Carolyn Duncan, was also taken in for questioning.

These and other GECOM staffers have all been arrested and charged by the Police in what they claim is an ongoing investigation into electoral fraud following the March 2 elections.

“This latest devious and abominable action by the PPP regime further crystallises that they are horrified and frightened by the APNU+AFC Coalition’s elections petitions which they know they will lose and will result in their removal from government which they temporarily occupy. They are attempting every desperate tactic to thwart the hearing of the election petition,” APNU+AFC said in its release today.

According to the coalition, the government’s actions is “designed to cause public strife and discord and are part of a clear plan to attack, intimidate, persecute and oppress Afro-Guyanese who are perceived to be supportive of the APNU+AFC Coalition. The PPP is instigating and fuelling ethnic strife and confrontation in Guyana,” the Opposition noted.

The APNU+AFC Coalition is warning CARICOM, the United Nations and the international community, that Afro-Guyanese are under attack in Guyana from the PPP regime and that they have weaponized the Guyana Police Force against the APNU+AFC leadership, activists and supporters.
