GUYANA | Nigel and Cathy Hughes property firebombed; Arson suspected

Featured GUYANA | Nigel and Cathy Hughes property firebombed; Arson suspected
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, October 19, 2020 - Arson is suspected, at a property on Middle Street Georgetown, owned by attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes and his wife Opposition MP and former Cabinet member Cathy Hughes, which was set ablaze on Monday evening, damaging the interior of the structure.

The Fire Services, responding to an alarm, arrived at the building which houses the Midtown Restaurant, Bar and Hotel on Middle Street, just in time to prevent what could have been a major conflagration.

Speculations are that an explosive device was thrown on the top floor of the building which once housed the Sidewalk Cafe, igniting a fire. The fire was extinguished. The top floor sustained substantial damage.

Hughes, who was called to the scene, confirmed that based on the evidence, arsonists attempted to destroy the building by fire. He said the fire was set in four rooms where the mattresses were braced against the wall. He said four incendiaries wrapped in toilet paper were found on the scene.

While the motives are not clear, fingers are being pointed in the direction of the Peoples Progressive Party, as Hughes and his law firm has taken on the defence of members of staff of the Guyana Elections Commission, election agents, and APNU/AFC Coalition Executives who are being persecuted by the PPP government by way of private criminal charges.

Hughes' wife, Cathy Hughes, is the former Minister of Public Telecommunication in the David Granger administration and a current APNU-AFC Member of Parliament.

She has been very critical of the Ali/Jagdeo administration for its racism and terrorist actions against Afro-Guyanese and fomenting racial strife and violence in the country.
