JAMAICA | Increase the income-tax threshold urges PNP President Mark Golding

MONTEGO BAY, MAY 21, 2023 - PNP President and Opposition Leader Mark Golding says he is once again calling on the Holness Administration to increase the income tax threshold from the present $1.5M was implemented 7 years ago in 2016.

Speakling at a press conference to deal with the massive salary increases, the Opposition Leader said one of the reasons why the government should look towards an increase in the tax threshold, stems from the fact that inflation over the period since the last time it was implemented has ballooned to  some40%.

Golding went on to point out that he would lead by example and “redirect the bulk of the 240% increase in my pay, retaining 20% of the increase, and contributing the rest to persons in need and other worthy causes.”

“I intend to do this until the outstanding grouses of the middle tier of public sector workers are satisfactorily addressed,”  Mr. Golding said.

“It is unfair for the Cabinet to position themselves at the extreme top end of the salary scale while the rest of the Public Sector remains at the lower end. This disparity is unjust and should be rectified,” he noted.
