KINGSTON, Jamaica, Friday May 25, 2018 – Jamaica’s opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has been the first political party in the region to publicly congratulate Mia Mottley on yesterday’s massive election victory that saw her being sworn in as the country’s first female prime minister this afternoon.

PNP president Dr Peter Phillips said the Barbados Labour Party’s landslide victory signaled the desire of residents for “change, renewed hope, the re-invigoration of CARICOM and a strong collective Caribbean voice in the global community”.

“A friend of the PNP, the BLP’s return to power marks a move towards people-centred governance, which is always a welcomed development that benefits all,” he said.

“The PNP wishes the new government success as it takes on board the expectations of the people of Barbados and strives to improve the lives of the majority of its people.”

Mottley, who was guest speaker at the PNP’s annual conference last year, has joined Dame Eugenia Charles of Dominica, Kamala Persad Bissessar of Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica’s Portia Simpson Miller, as the only female Caribbean leaders the region has ever had.
