GUYANA | Political Parties nominate for March 2 General and Regional Elections

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, January 10, 2020 - Guyana's political parties, including  its two largest political organisations — A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) — marched through the streets of Georgetown to Umana Yana today,where they handed in their nomination papers to the Guyana Elections Commission, in their bid to contest the March 2 General elections.

Traditionally, City Hall has been the seat for Nomination Day but due to the dilapidated condition of that building, the elections commission decided to use Umana Yana.

With a throng of supporters behind them, leaders of the APNU+AFC were the first to hand in their list of candidates to the Guyana Elections Commission today at the Umana Yana.

Granger was accompanied by his running mate, Khemraj Ramjattan and other executive members of the six parties which make up the coalition. Other members of the leadership of the APNU+AFC expressed their satisfaction that the list they have is a winning one for the elections.

Coalition leader, President David Granger, says the list is a safe and competent one that will ensure victory at the polls. “We have over the last few months been very careful to lay down the principles by which persons that are selected and we decided on the criteria among the six partners and I am satisfied that the partners have reached that criteria…we went through the process and we have the best list. It is a winning list,” Granger said.

“We have a proven record, and the list of persons that we have submitted, I am very sure will be able to do [us] proud in the National Assembly and in the Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) and of course in the Cabinet” he said. 

PPPIn the meantime, the People’s Progressive Party Civic sported a large number of its supporters as it Marched from its headquarters on Robb Street to the Umana Yana on High Street to present the party’s list of candidates.

The party’s Presidential Candidate Irfaan Ali said he is ready for the elections and the only thing his mind is focused on now is winning.The PPP's prime ministerial candidate Retired Brigadier Mark Phillips.

“We have a list that is very diverse and a list that embodies competence, experience, youth and energy, a list that represents all of Guyana”, Mr. Ali said.

The PPP's list included former harsh critic of the People’s Progressive Party, Tony Vieira who sold his television station, VCT Channel 28, to Guyana Times. whose main principal is Ranjisinghi Bobby Ramroop. Also on the list are Attorney-at-Law Sanjeev Datadin, Private Sector Executive Deodat Indar, Television and radio station owner Anand Persaud, former Region 2 Chairman Devanand Ramdatt and former Ministry of Education employee Jenieve Blackman.
