KINGSTON, March 27, 2019 - Against the background of a ground-swell of criticism against Eastern Portland MP Ann-Marie Vaz who said she spent nothing on her election cvampaign, The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is maintaining that the April 4 Portland Eastern by-election cost Ann-Marie Vaz nothing because the party did all the spending.
Questions have been raised about the recently published Return of Election Expenses for Mrs Vaz which showed the amount she spent and donations received as 'nil'.
In a release Monday afternoon, the JLP said it wanted to clarify the declaration.
It explained that the law governing the financing of political campaigns permits full financing of candidates by their political parties.
According to the JLP, Financial control of the campaign was managed by the Jamaica Labour Party. This is the reason for the nil declaration made by her in relation to the By-election.
The JLP said Mrs Vaz's sole focus was on the campaign on the ground,
According to the JLP statement, "It should be further noted that the declaration of the Political Party Expenses for Portland Eastern By-election are not due until October 2019 as required by the Election Financing Campaign Legislation and Regulations 2017. The Jamaica Labour Party will comply and declare all expenses incurred for the Portland Eastern By-Election."
Mrs. Vaz's opponent in the by-election, Damion Crawford reported receiving $2.7 million in donations and spending was $4.75 million in total.
