The parties emerged from the meeting rather tight lipped, however, a press conference has been scheduled for Wednesday morning at which time more information on the meeting will be available.
In the meantime both Dr. Phillips and Peter Bunting entered Gordon House this afternoon together in a show of unity, as parliament resumed from the summer break. They were accompanied by PNP general secretary Julian Robinson and key members of both leadership campaigns, Mark Golding and Natalie Neita.
This morning's meeting came in the wake of criticisms about the tone and content of Phillips' victory speech last Saturday when he beat Bunting by 76 votes in the presidential election at Kingston's National Arena.
Following their internal election loss Bunting resigned from the party's shadow cabinet as spokesperson on industry, commerce and competitiveness, while his campaign chairman Mark Golding resigned as spokesperson on finance and campaign manager Dr Dayton Campbell, resigned as spokesman on health.
However, in a release yesterday, Dr. Phillips said the Shadow cabinet will be reorganized after the Party’s Annual Conference ends on September 22.
“Following my re-election as President of the People's National Party last Saturday, a number of members of the Shadow Cabinet, consistent with tradition, have tendered their resignation as Shadow Ministers.
At a meeting of the Party's National Executive Council in April this year, I had indicated that I would be reorganizing the Shadow Cabinet after the end of the Parliamentary Sectoral Debate. The internal Presidential election intervened and I considered it prudent to postpone that exercise.
I now intend to undertake the Shadow Cabinet reorganization after the conclusion of the Party's Annual Conference on September 22. Until then I have asked all Shadow Ministers remain in place and continue to monitor their assigned portfolio.” Dr Phillips said.
