Kingston, Jamaica. May 17, 2026: PNP News Release - The People’s National Party (PNP) has expressed deep outrage and sadness over Sunday afternoon’s fatal shooting of a woman, identified as "Buju," in Granville, St. James.

Opposition Spokesperson on National Security, Fitz Jackson, says the killing, which occurred during a community protest over the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy in the same area by police a week ago, demands immediate and transparent action.

While Jackson acknowledges the swift action by the Police High Command to interdict the officer involved, he stresses that immediate suspensions are no longer enough to fix the deep breakdown of trust between citizens and the police.

“The Granville community is dealing with an absolute tragedy, compounded by two fatal police shootings in just one week," Jackson said. "While interdicting the officer is a necessary first step, we need a transparent, fast, and completely independent investigation by INDECOM. The residents of Granville and the wider Jamaica deserve the truth. We cannot keep losing citizens during interactions with the law enforcement officers who are paid to protect them."

“Even in the face of this intense grief and understandable anger, I am appealing to the residents of Granville to remain calm and allow the independent investigators to carry out their work. Justice must be pursued through the proper legal channels so that the integrity of the process is protected,” Jackson said.

The Spokesperson also added, “Regrettably, too many innocent and law abiding citizens are becoming almost as fearful of the police as they are of criminals. This cannot be allowed to continue in our country.”

Supporting the call for accountability, Opposition Spokesperson on Gender Affairs, Denise Daley, pointed to the devastating impact these continuous cycles of violence are having on Jamaican families. “The heartbreak in Granville right now is a heavy weight being carried by mothers, families, and neighbors who are watching their loved ones taken away in the most traumatic ways," Daley said. "Whether it is a young boy with his entire life ahead of him or a woman standing up for her community, every single life cut short leaves a permanent scar. We must protect our people and demand a policing culture that truly values human life."

Jackson is urging the JCF leadership to immediately deploy community relations teams to Granville to de-escalate tensions and reassure residents who are rightfully on edge.
