CARICOM | Caribbean Mourns Loss of Diplomatic Giant Sir Shridath Ramphal
Kingston, Jamaica, August 30, 2024 - The Caribbean region is in mourning following the passing of Sir Shridath "Sonny" Ramphal, a towering figure in Caribbean and international diplomacy.
Sir Shridath, who served as Commonwealth Secretary-General and held various high-level positions throughout his illustrious career, died on August 30, 2024.
The CARICOM Secretariat expressed profound sadness at the loss of what they called "a stalwart of our Community." In a statement, they lauded Sir Shridath's "trail of excellence in diplomacy, law, academia and politics," noting his respected status not only in his homeland of Guyana but across the Caribbean region and the Commonwealth of Nations.
Sir Shridath was recognized as a leading advocate for regionalism, contributing significantly to its advancement through his service to the legal fraternity, institutions of higher learning, and as Chairman of the West Indian Commission. His 1992 report, "Time for Action," is considered a seminal work in Caribbean integration efforts.
The People's National Party (PNP) of Jamaica also paid tribute to Sir Shridath, describing him as "one of the Caribbean's most distinguished statesmen." The party highlighted his roles as Guyana's former Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs, as well as his tenure as Commonwealth Secretary-General.Mark Golding, Leader of the Opposition and President of the PNP, said, "Sir Shridath Ramphal was a masterful statesman, diplomat, and orator. His contributions to the Caribbean and the wider world will never be forgotten."
Both CARICOM and the PNP emphasized Sir Shridath's global impact, particularly his advocacy for developing nations and his role in the international fight against apartheid. His commitment to justice, equality, and the advancement of Global South countries was noted as a source of inspiration for many across the Caribbean.
Sir Shridath's accolades include the Order of the Caribbean Community, the region's highest honor, which he received in 1992 in recognition of his sterling contributions to the Caribbean.
As the region mourns, Sir Shridath Ramphal's legacy as a visionary leader, skilled negotiator, and champion of Caribbean unity and progress remains firmly intact. His passing marks the end of an era, but his influence on Caribbean diplomacy and international relations will undoubtedly continue to shape the region's future.
