JAMAICA | PNP Says Government Must Safeguard the Ecologically Sensitive Mammee Bay Area

KINGSTON, Jamaica. January 26, 2024: The Opposition is urging the Government to take decisive action to protect the ecologically sensitive Mammee Bay area from any disturbance that the proposed development by the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) could cause.

The public meeting held last week in St. Ann, marks a crucial juncture in the ongoing efforts to protect the vital ecological heritage of the Mammee Bay area. Many residents and interested stakeholders voiced their concerns and consternation with the declared intent to construct a residential development in the area. Their concerns must be heeded.

Senator Frazer Binns emphasizes the need for responsible and sustainable development that prioritizes the preservation of our natural resources. She said, “Part of the proposed development will impact critical watersheds for ecologically sensitive areas such as Dunn’s River, Roaring River, Bogue, Mammee Bay and surrounding communities in Ocho Rios. 

We staunchly oppose the granting of any environmental permit, that will harm local residents and jeopardize the delicate environmental balance of the region.”

While accepting that the lands allocated to CHEC were part of the North-South Highway agreement, the Opposition noted that the specific parcel of land in question was the decision of the Andrew Holness-led Government after 2016.

The Shadow Minister therefore calls on the Prime Minister to provide alternate lands for development. She further states that any development of lands in the ecologically sensitive region must be approached with utmost caution and consideration for the long-term impact on the environment.

"We cannot afford to compromise the ecological integrity of the Mammee Bay area, which plays a critical role in sustaining our environment and the delicate ecosystems that thrive in this region”, said Frazer Binns.

The Shadow Minister encourages all residents, environmentalists, and community leaders to continue their peaceful advocacy, urging NEPA/NRCA  not to grant the permit sought for this development.
