KINGSTON, Jamaica. January 18, 2024: Shadow Minister on Gender, Denise Daley, has condemned the brutal murder of paralegal Sandra Risden, who was taken from her loved ones early this morning, while en route to work.

In a statement today Ms Daley expressed concern over the increasing incidents of violence against women and girls,  noting that “such calculatedly callous acts have no place in our society, and urgent, decisive action is needed.”

“The shocking murder of Sandra Risden has sent shockwaves throughout our country,” said Ms. Daley, who has extended her condolences to Sandra's family and friends, and is urging the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

She emphasized  that society must stand united against such egregious acts, declaring, "There is no place for such violence in our society. We must do more to protect the lives and dignity of women."

Ms Daley pointed to yesterday’s assault on Councillor Patricia Harris, which she said further underscored the urgent need for increased security measures and heightened public awareness.

She said  "Violence against women, whether in the workplace, public or private spaces, is an affront to our values and a threat to the safety of our citizens. We cannot tolerate such acts, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all."

Less than a week ago, Councillor for the Treadways Divison, Sydney Rose,  led a call at a sitting of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation, for security protection for Councillors.

Councillor Rose also asked for protection in the line of duty given the recent murder of Councillor Ainsley Parkins, who was shot and killed while inspecting work-related projects. “We are pleading with the relevant authorities to urgently heed the calls of the councillors and restore the dignity and safety of their working conditions”, implored the Shadow Minister.

In the wake of distressing incidents, Ms. Daley has asked for immediate action on multiple fronts and at the same time urging citizens to unleash a powerful Public Outcry, fostering a collective voice of outrage and solidarity against violence towards women.

The shadow minister has also called for heightened Law Enforcement Vigilance, emphasizing the need for swift and thorough investigations, coupled with the rapid prosecution of perpetrators to ensure justice prevails.

Recognizing the importance of a holistic approach, Ms Daley has underscored the significance of Community Engagement, urging the implementation of grassroots initiatives to raise awareness, educate communities, and foster a culture of zero tolerance towards gender-based violence.

"We cannot stand idly by while women continue to face violence in our society. More needs to be done, and it is our duty to ensure the safety and dignity of every individual. Let us unite in our resolve to eradicate violence against women and girls from our communities," Ms. Daley concluded.
