JAMAICA urged to Expand Its Ports and Increase use of Innovation and Technology to Reduce Backlog

Kingston, Jamaica. December 6, 2023: Opposition Spokesperson on Commerce, Technology and Innovation Dr. Andre Haughton is calling on the government to improve port capacity and enhance logistical connectivity.

In a statement today, Dr. Haughton said “The limited capacity of Jamaican ports has been identified as a bottleneck in the timely delivery of goods. This issue must be addressed through targeted investments in port infrastructure including dredging activities to deepen harbours, upgrading cargo handling facilities, and implementing smart technologies to enhance operational efficiency.”

He added that enhancing logistical connectivity within the country must be a priority, from streamlining transportation networks to facilitating the efficient movement of goods from ports to distribution centres. In order to optimize logistics, the government must collaborate with relevant stakeholders to optimize logistical processes and improve the flow of goods within the country.

The Opposition spokesman pointed out that “The Christmas season is upon us again where businesses import critical goods and friends and families import gifts for their loved ones.”

“These goods come in at the ports, which are vital nodes in the logistics network, but sometimes struggle to accommodate the increased volume of containers arriving at our shores.

“There have been instances where ships, laden with goods for the holiday season, are unable to dock due to the limited capacity of our ports

Dr. Haughton went on to say that “as the Opposition Spokesperson on Commerce, Technology and Innovation, I continue to emphasize the importance of adopting digital solutions to better manage and track the movement of goods. Jamaica must Leverage technology and innovation to improve supply chain visibility and operational efficiency.

“We have to encourage the adoption of technology solutions to enhance supply chain visibility, streamline operations, and minimize disruptions” Dr. Haughton said.
