JAMAICA | Opposition Spokesperson on Housing Strongly Supports Action of Portmore Municipality Against Housing Association of Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica. October 3, 2022: Opposition Spokesperson on Housing and Sustainable Living, Senator Dr. Floyd Morris, is in full support of the Portmore Municipal Corporation and its position in placing a stop order on the Sandown Palm Development.

In a statement today, Senator Morris stated that the Municipal Corporation has the right to intervene and take action if the established rules and procedures for housing development in Jamaica are breached.

The Spokesperson has expressed his concern about what he describes as a growing trend among some Government Officials and Institutions, to act as if they are above the governing laws. According to Senator Morris, “This is another demonstration of ‘government badness’ at play and the Housing Association of Jamaica must comply with the rules and regulations of the land.”

Senator Morris further questions the rationale and motivation behind the pricing of J$22 million for each unit. He described this as an exorbitant increase in cost when compared to similar units sold between J$9-14 million by private developers. According to Dr. Morris, “The government is on a clear path to take the price of housing out of the reach of working-class Jamaicans.”

The Opposition Spokesperson assures that policies for affordable housing and guidelines for the building of modern and sustainably smart houses will be implemented when the people of Jamaica return the PNP administration to power.
