GUYANA | Widespread Concern over deteriorating State of Freedom of Expression in Guyana
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, December 29, 2023 - The Institute for Action Against Discrimination says it is deeply concerned about “the deteriorating state of freedom of expression in our beloved country under the governance of Bharrat Jagdeo / Irfaan Ali and the People's Progressive Party (PPP) Government.”
In a statement, the institute said a “Recent press conference at Freedom House has exposed a worrying trend of silencing dissenting voices and suppressing the fundamental right of citizens to freely express their opinions.”
“Our institute firmly condemns the actions of Bharrat Jagdeo/ Irfaan Ali and the PPP Government, which have created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, stifling public discourse and endangering democratic principles that our nation holds dear. It is with great regret that we declare that under their rule, citizens are unable to voice their concerns, criticism, or disagreements with the government without facing severe consequences.
The organization pointed out that “The suppression of freedom of expression has far-reaching implications on our society. As a nation that prides itself on upholding democratic values, it is disheartening to witness the unwarranted constraints placed on the right to freely express oneself. The voice of the people is the cornerstone of a thriving democracy, and its stifling undermines the foundations that our nation was built upon.”
“We implore Bharrat Jagdeo / Irfaan Ali and the PPP Government to reconsider their approach towards dissent and critique. It is crucial for a government to encourage diverse perspectives and constructive dialogue, as this fosters transparency, accountability, and progress.
“By curbing citizens' ability to express their thoughts, their right to hold the government accountable is severely undermined, potentially leading to an erosion of democratic practices within our country.
The Institute for Action Against Discrimination says it “is calling upon the international community, human rights organizations, and responsible global citizens to join us in demanding a swift and meaningful change to the current state of affairs in our country. We urge them to closely monitor the situation and advocate for the restoration of freedom of expression, without which a society cannot function freely and equitably.
“We stand united with the brave individuals who continue to challenge the oppressive environment under the PPP Government. The Institute for Action Against Discrimination pledges its unwavering commitment to defending and supporting those who dare to exercise their right to speak up, demanding a fair and inclusive society,” the Institute concluded.
