Kingston, Jamaica. September 21, 2024: Opposition Spokesman on Environment and Ecological Heritage Senator Sophia Frazer-Binns is urging Jamaicans to get involved in  taking care of the health of our marine ecosystems.

In her message marking the observance  of  International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day, she said “we are reminded of the vital role each of us must play in safeguarding the health of our oceans and coastlines.

“Our beaches are not only places of beauty and recreation; they are critical to the well-being of our communities, the sustainability of our tourism industry, and the health of our marine ecosystems.

“Unfortunately, pollution continues to threaten these vital resources, with debris damaging marine life, polluting our waters, and impacting our livelihoods, " senator Frazer-Binns said.

She noted that “participating in ICC Day is about more than just removing trash from our shores—it’s about taking a stand for the environment and recognizing the need for long-term solutions to pollution.

“By removing waste, we are preserving the delicate balance of marine life that depends on clean, healthy waters to thrive. By reducing the pollutants that harm sea creatures, coral reefs, and other ecosystems, we are contributing directly to the sustainability of marine life, which in turn supports fisheries, tourism, and local economies,”she said.

“A cleaner coastline means a healthier environment for all of us, and for the biodiversity that sustains life beneath the waves. By taking action today and continuing these efforts throughout the year, we contribute to protecting our natural heritage for future generations.

“I encourage every Jamaican to get involved, whether by joining a cleanup effort or simply being more mindful of how we dispose of waste. Together, we can create lasting change and ensure that our beautiful beaches remain pristine and our marine life flourishes for years to come.
