JAMAICA |Phillip Paulwell Highlights Need for Urgency in Post-Hurricane Beryl Power Restoration

Kingston, Jamaica. July 9, 2024: Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Mining, and Climate Change, Phillip Paulwell, has issued a statement highlighting the critical need for prioritising emergency areas and expressing sympathy for the hardships faced by the people of Jamaica.

He said “Despite pre-storm cutting of trees and other preparatory efforts, Hurricane Beryl has left a trail of damage across the island, impacting infrastructure and causing widespread power outages. People need to see early action towards power restoration in the affected areas.”

Mr. Paulwell praised the hard-working staff of JPSCo and urged them to work relentlessly towards expediting the restoration process.

Mr. Paulwell also underscored the urgency of prioritising critical areas of emergency, particularly hospitals, which are essential for public health and safety. "It is imperative that we prioritise the restoration of power to critical areas such as hospitals," he emphasised. "These facilities are vital for providing medical care and must receive immediate attention to ensure they can operate effectively during this critical time."

The Spokesman also expressed his sympathy to the people of Jamaica who are enduring hardships due to the storm, including the spoiling of food due to prolonged power outages. "I want to extend my deepest sympathies to all those who are facing difficulties, particularly those who have lost perishable goods due to the lack of refrigeration," he said. "This is a significant burden, and my thoughts are with everyone affected."

Looking ahead, Mr. Paulwell expressed hope that international assistance will be sought to aid in the recovery and rebuilding efforts. "In these challenging times, it is crucial that we seek international assistance to support our recovery efforts," he stated. "Global collaboration will be key to rebuilding stronger and more resilient communities."

The Opposition Spokesman remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure a swift and comprehensive recovery from Hurricane Beryl and to strengthen Jamaica's resilience against future storms.
