GUYANA | GDF Aircraft Carrying Guyana President and Barbadian PM “slips off” runway at Ogle Airport
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, August 23, 2022 - The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is investigating an incident in which a GDF Skyvan aircraft with President Irfaan Ali and Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley aboard skidded off the runway shortly after landing at the Ogle Airtport, also called the Eugene F. Correia Airport, last Sunday evening.
According to reports, from News Source Guyana, the Skyvan, a British 19-seat aircraft had just landed with its VIP passengers from Boa Vista, when it veered off the taxi way as it was heading towards the terminal building.
The aircraft, which ended up getting stuck in the mud to the side of the taxiway, was quickly surrounded by airport emergency teams including the Fire Service.
The President and the Barbadian Prime Minister and their teams were forced to exit the aircraft at the side of the runway, and were taken to the terminal building by the Presidential fleet of vehicles.
The incident is being investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority to determine whether pilot error by was the cause for the mishap or whether there might have been a mechanical issue.
The aircraft was commanded by two seasoned senior pilots of the Guyana Defence Force.
