JAMAICA | Rising Track Stars for Comets Run For The Republic at Herbert Morrison High

CHARLOTTE, NC (January 8, 2025) -- In a move to reshape youth athletics in Jamaica, the Montego Bay Comets Athletics Club is expanding its signature development meet, setting the stage for what promises to be a landmark event in the region's sporting calendar.

The second annual 'Run for the Republic' track and field competition, scheduled for January 18 at Herbert Morrison Technical High School, comes with significant changes aimed at nurturing young talent more effectively.

Meet organizer Aubrey Campbell, determined to build on last year's success that drew eighteen schools and clubs, has unveiled a strategic overhaul of the event's structure.

In a departure from the 2024 format, prep and primary school athletes will now compete separately, a change that Campbell believes will better serve the development agenda.

"We're creating more focused competitive environments," Campbell explained, while announcing an increase in participant allowances from two to five athletes per event per team. "It's about striking the right balance between opportunity and resources."

In a touching tribute to sports journalism, the meet will inaugurate an annual J$37,000 scholarship in memory of the late Hubert Lawrence. The award, targeting student-athletes in grades 10 or 12 at Herbert Morrison Technical High, underscores the growing partnership between organizers and the host institution.

The 2025 edition brings strategic event modifications designed to showcase different aspects of athletic prowess. Notable changes include replacing the high school girls' 400m with a 100m dash, opening the women's 4x400m relay to all competitors, and introducing a 400m race in place of the Class 1 boys' 800m.

The high school girls' Class 2 division will see a shift from 200m to 400m events, adding an extra layer of challenge for competitors.

Reflecting the meet's growing prominence, entry fees have been adjusted to J$10,000 for single-gender schools and J$15,000 for co-ed institutions. The participation cost for unattached athletes remains under consideration, with organizers expected to announce rates shortly.

Schools and clubs interested in participating have until Friday, January 10, to register through the Fortis Timing platform.

The event, set to begin at 9:00 am, has attracted support from a diverse array of corporate partners, including Custom Marble & Design Jamaica Ltd, EFAY Rent A Car, Peppa's Restaurant, Karann Koncepts Events, Veggietarry Natural Juices, and You Choose Radio Network/GA.
