JAMAICA | People's National Party Mourns the Loss of Veteran Sports Journalist Hubert Lawrence

KINGSTON, Jamaica, February 24, 2024: The People's National Party expresses deep sorrow and extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, media fraternity, and the entire track and field community on the passing of the esteemed veteran sports journalist, Mr. Hubert Lawrence.

Mr. Lawrence, often regarded as the encyclopedia of global track and field, played an instrumental role in shaping the narrative of Jamaica's athletic prowess. His remarkable contributions span over three decades, reflecting an unwavering commitment to his craft.

A distinguished graduate of St. Jago High School, Mr. Lawrence's legacy is marked by his authorship and co-authorship of numerous informative books chronicling Jamaica's illustrious track and field journey.

As the foremost and staple face and voice of the Jamaican track and field landscape, Mr. Lawrence's warm personality endeared him to many.

His absence leaves a void that will undoubtedly be felt across the nation. The People's National Party acknowledges the invaluable impact he had on sports journalism and mourns the loss of a true icon.

Hubert Lawrence's passing is a profound loss to our nation, and we join the entire nation in honouring his memory. We extend our thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Hubert who was also a columnist with The Gleaner,is said to have died peacefully at home sometime on Friday.

Reacting to news of Hubert's passing, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said he was a distinguished sports journalist whose contributions to the nation's sporting landscape were invaluable.

Holness said, with a career spanning more than three decades, Mr Lawrence played a crucial role in television coverage of prestigious athletic events such as the Olympics and World Championships, as well as local meets.

He noted as well that Mr Lawrence's contributions as a columnist for The Gleaner showcased his profound knowledge and passion for the sport. 

The veteran writer and broadcast journalist, is considered the encyclopedia of Jamaican track and field, and has been a staple in TVJ's track and field coverage of the Olympics, World Championships and other regional and local meets.

Prior to Friday night's shocking news, Lawrence was due to be a member of TVJ's coverage during Saturday's staging of the Gibson McCook Relays.

Born in 1960, the St. Jago alumnus would have been 64 years old this year. He  got involved in track and field and started providing commentary 33 years ago in 1991.

He has written and co-authored books to include Champs 100 in 2010, The Power and the Glory: Jamaica in World Athletics, From World War II to the Diamond League Era in 2012 as well as 50 Days of Fire in 2022.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may light perpetual shine upon him.
