GEORGETOWN, Guyana, March 21, 2025 - The arrest and detention of social media influencer, Ms. Melissa “Melly Mel” Atwell, in the United States has sparked widespread concern, with every major political party in the National Assembly speaking out, except for the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).
Ms. Atwell, a Guyanese citizen and passport holder, is being detained on allegations of an immigration infraction. While her outspoken criticism of the PPP government, particularly in relation to corruption and accountability, may have made her a target, that does not justify ignoring the rights she is entitled to as a citizen. Vice President Jagdeo must come forward and give clear, direct answers to the nation and the international community. Specifically, he must address:
This is a defining moment for Vice President Jagdeo and the PPP. They must rise above vitriol and petty political games, and act in the best interest of Guyana and its citizens.
The PPP government has an opportunity today to prove that it values the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights, no matter their political views or affiliations. Anything less would be an abdication of responsibility.
