AFRICA | Diaspora Resettlement Initiative launched in Accra, Ghana

ACCRA, Ghana, November 9, 2023 - In the bustling heart of Accra, Ghana, a groundbreaking initiative by the Digital Africa Diaspora Development Services (DADDS) on Wednesday November 8, marked a new chapter in the story of the African diaspora.

Chief Trevor Beckford, President of DADDS and a native of Jamaica, addressed the gathering with a clear and forward-looking perspective. "Our goal," he stated, "is to enable a seamless return to Ghana, the seat of our ancestral roots. We envision a journey where every individual arrives, not as an outsider, but as a family member, welcomed into the fold of our shared African heritage."

Under Chief Trevor's leadership, DADDS has set in motion a plan to construct transitional hubs, serving as foundations for the ambitious Smart City project in Greater Accra.

This initiative aligns with global objectives, including the UN-17 SDGs, the African Union's Agenda 2063, the Africa Continental Free Trade Area, and the legacy of Kofi Annan, reflecting a commitment to sustainable and inclusive development.

The organization's focus extends to bridging the digital divide, leveraging Africa’s Sixth Region's digital technologies to enhance resettlement and foster economic cooperation.

Moreover, DADDS will provide assistance in formal Rites Of Passage, ensuring a smooth cultural transition and integration into African societies.

Addressing the urgent need for skilled professionals, DADDS has committed to conducting Capacity Building programs aimed at filling gaps in various sectors, including science and engineering.

Additionally, the Chance 2 Mental Wellness & Recovery Hubs initiative stands out, aiming to train 700,000 mental health specialists over the next seven years and providing job opportunities, with a special focus on empowering young African women.

The organization also plans to drive large-scale industrial projects in agriculture and fisheries, promoting Afro/Agro-Businesses that will create a nexus of trade and development between Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

In a show of support and commitment, Ghana’s Director of Diaspora Affairs, Office of the President, Mr. Akwasi Awua Ababio, expressed his endorsement of this transformative initiative.

He underscored the importance of the project in strengthening ties within the African diaspora.

Mr. Ababio's office is poised to play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth transition of individuals repatriating from the Caribbean to Ghana, symbolizing a bridge between nations and a shared future.

Adding to this wave of support, Jamaica's Honorary Consul in Ghana, Mr. Isaac Emmil Osei Bonsu, recognized the significance of the DADDS initiative.

He empathized with the emotional challenges inherent in leaving one's homeland to start anew in a foreign country.

Mr. Bonsu lauded the objectives of DADDS, highlighting the importance of initiatives that facilitate a seamless resettlement process. His remarks echo a universal truth: the value of having a supportive framework in place during such pivotal life transitions.

It was noted that this initiative represents a strategic and visionary approach to rekindling the connections of the African diaspora with their roots. It's a step towards building a future where heritage and progress go hand in hand, shaping a world where boundaries are transcended and cultures are united.
