GUYANA | Comply with the court order ! IFAAD tells the Ali gov't.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, May 7, 2024 - The Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD), calling on the Ail led PPP Government to fully adhere to the court order issued by Justice Sandil Kissoon in favor of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU).

In a statement, Vice Chairman of IFAAD, Pt Ubraj Narine said the organization  "is concerned about the ongoing struggle for fair compensation and benefits faced by teachers, especially in light of the unequivocal ruling from the court.

"The court's decision, which was handed down by Justice Sandil Kissoon, provides a clear directive to the Ail led PPP Government on the issue of salary and benefits for teachers. However, it is disheartening to note that despite the unambiguous verdict, teachers are still compelled to resort to strike actions in their quest for improved working conditions," Narine said

"IFAAD believes that the government has a moral and legal obligation to honour the court's ruling and ensure that teachers receive fair compensation and benefits with meaningful dialogue and negotiation with the Guyana Teachers Union , IFAAD wishes to remind the government that education is the cornerstone of any society, and the dedicated efforts of teachers should be acknowledged and rewarded accordingly," the statement pointed out.

IFAAD emphasized that the continuation of these strikes has detrimental effects on the education system, causing disruption in the lives of students and parents.

It noted that  "It is imperative for the Ail led PPP Government to prioritize dialogue and negotiation with the Guyana Teachers Union in order to resolve this issue swiftly and honourably.

"The Institute for Action Against Discrimination stands in solidarity with the Guyana Teachers Union and supports their efforts to secure a better future for educators.

"We urge the Ail led PPP Government to prioritize the interests of teachers and comply with the court order, thereby fostering a harmonious and inclusive educational environment, the statement concluded.
