JAMAICA | The JLP's Horace Chang wants Ian Hayles to Apologise over Black Tank Statement
KINGSTON, Jamaica. April 18, 2024: The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) today strongly condemned statements made by People’s National Party (PNP) Vice President Ian Hayles, which they claim have resulted in significant distress and threats against a local businessman.
General Secretary Dr. Horace Chang has characterized Hayles' remarks as "reckless, irresponsible, and callous."
Hayles, a candidate for the Western Westmoreland constituency, recorded videos alleging that the government distributed water tanks disproportionately and with partisan bias under the Black Tank program.
These accusations have since been debunked by a businessman who, having purchased tanks for over half a million dollars privately, now faces public scrutiny and has received threats due to these claims.
The affected businessman, deeply disturbed by these allegations, stated to the media: “Mr. Ian Hayles, you need to come and hear my side of the story before making such claims. You’ve caused me sleepless nights worrying about the safety of my tanks and what could happen to them due to your statements.”Dr. Chang is demanding that Hayles issues an immediate apology for the misinformation, denounce the threats against the businessman, and refrain from further irresponsible conduct. “This situation underscores a concerning pattern within the PNP of resorting to fabrications for political gain,” said Dr. Chang.
He further criticized what he has described as the broader pattern of misleading rhetoric from the PNP leadership, urging a more accountable approach. “It’s time for a shift towards addressing the real challenges Jamaicans face daily rather than creating divisiveness,” Dr. Chang added.
The JLP has reaffirmed its commitment to the fair and transparent implementation of the Black Tank program, essential for alleviating water shortages faced by Jamaicans.
In a parting shot, The JLP General Secretary is wondering “if this incident is not part of a broader strategy by the PNP to undermine the government’s efforts to assist those affected by the ongoing drought.”
Dr. Chang concluded by urging PNP leader Golding to take corrective actions against Hayles and help steer the party towards more constructive and truthful discourse.
