JAMAICA | Wiredja Online Understands that GG Has Signed Controversial Constitutional Amendment

MONTEGO BAY, July 30, 2023 - Wiredja understands that despite calls for caution and letters to the Governor General to delay signing the controversial constitutional amendment introduced and passed this week in both houses without any discussion, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen has gone ahead and signed the Bill.

On Friday, attorneys representing the Opposition sent a letter to the GG asking that he delay signing the bill, as it is now the subject of a constitutional challenge in the High Court.

In addition, the lawyers sent to the Governor General, case histories from the UK Privy Council involving the Independent  Jamaica Council for Human Rights (1998)Ltd and others v Marshall-Burnett to support their claim.

Only days ago Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Kathy Ann Pyke, wrote an extensive letter to Prime Minister Andrew Holness appealing to him not to extend the DPP's tenure. The following is the full text of the letter written to the Prime Minister by Pyke who the DPP described as resentful.
