MONTSERRAT | Veteran Statesman Reuben Meade Returns to Lead Montserrat's New Chapter

BRADES,  Montserrat, October 29, 2024 - In a dramatic return to politics, 70-year-old Reuben Meade has reclaimed Montserrat's premiership, marking a full-circle moment for the seasoned politician who emerged from retirement to lead his newly formed United Alliance (UA) to electoral victory.

The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Governor Sarah Tucker, heralds a new era for this Caribbean nation.

"We no longer have supporters. This is not United Alliance versus the rest; this is Montserrat versus the rest," Meade declared in his inaugural address, setting a tone of unity for his administration. "We will work together to develop this country for us, our children, and grandchildren."

Meade's political résumé spans decades, including two terms as chief minister between 1991 and 2010, followed by his historic role as Montserrat's first premier from 2010 to 2014. His return to office comes with a pledge to reshape governance through inclusivity.

"We promise you to be a government of the people. Your government," he emphasized, deliberately distancing himself from traditional power dynamics. "You will never hear us saying my government. It is your government. We pledge to serve you honestly and with compassion."

In an innovative approach to leadership development, Meade announced a rotating deputy premiership, beginning with Veronica Dorsette Hector, who will also oversee the Infrastructure, Labour, Transport, Energy and Ecclesiastical Affairs portfolio. This rotation scheme, he explained, aims to cultivate experience among his team members, whom he praised for their "development over the past six months."

The electoral mathematics favored the UA, which secured five of nine Legislative Assembly seats, outpacing the People's Democratic Movement's three seats and the outgoing Movement for Change and Prosperity's single seat. Two additional uncontested positions - the Attorney General and Financial Secretary - complete the 11-member assembly.

Hitting the ground running, Meade outlined immediate priorities, including budget preparation and comprehensive ministerial visits. "Starting on Monday, my colleagues and I will be visiting each and every ministry together," he announced, scheduling a strategic retreat with senior public servants to review existing policies and plans.

Governor Tucker, in her remarks, emphasized the democratic mandate while acknowledging Opposition Leader Paul Lewis's crucial role in the volcano-ravaged island's governance. She commended all candidates for their commitment to public service, noting that their willingness to lead reflects "passion for the island and its people."

The installation of Meade's government marks both a return to experienced leadership and a promise of innovative governance for this resilient Caribbean nation.
