JAMAICA | Ruel Reid gets $23.2 million 'Golden Handshake' as he walks from Jamaica College
KINGSTON, Jamaica November 24, 2021 - Former Education Minister Ruel Reid is to be paid $23.2 million under the agreement which led to him rendering his resignation as principal of Jamaica College last Saturday.
A statement issued late Tuesday night by the Jamaica College Trust, said a little more than $16 million will be paid by the Ministry of Education, while the Jamaica College Trust has agreed to provide the additional $7.1 million in order to close the gap,
The statement said neither Jamaica College nor the board has paid or is to pay any funds as part of the settlement.
The Jamaica College Trust said, consistent with its policy of utilising funds for the long-term benefit of the school, it concluded that assisting to close the Ruel Reid chapter was an appropriate use of the money.
In the meantime, Education Minister Faval Williams has maintained to the media that she had not been informed of the details of the settlement.
Minister Williams explained that the legal advice that the government received was that according to current laws, and regulations governing the education sector, it was duty bound to make a contribution to the settlement.
