JAMAICA | PJ Patterson Resigns from Her Majesty's Privy Council

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica, April 14, 2022 - Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson has tendered his resignation as one of Her Majesty’s Privy Councillor consequent upon Jamaica's intent to become a Republic, and to appoint a Jamaican citizen as Head of State.

The following is the full text of Mr. Patterson's statement:

"I wish to publicly announce my retirement as a member of Her Majesty's Privy Council.

In a letter dated March 30, 2022, I advised the Clerk of the Private Council that " There now exists in Jamaica, a national consensus that we should effect during our own Diamond Jubilee of Independence, the process of appointing a citizen of our own country as Head of State.

In view of my strong support for this significant change and my determination to that end, I regard it as prudent and timely to retire from the Privy Council with immediate effect."

The reply of April 14, 2022 from the Privy Council Office confirmed an acceptance of my request to be removed from the list of members of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council."
