JAMAICA | PNP Pledges to Reverse PM’s Regressive NHT Policy when Back in Power

KINGSTON, Jamaica. August 25, 2022: Senator Dr Floyd Morris is joining Leader of the Opposition Mark Golding, MP in a pledge to reverse the Prime Minister’s regressive National Housing Trust (NHT) policy when the PNP returns to office.

According to a media release from the PNP, "the Party will reinstate the subsidy on interest rates for certain contributors at the National Housing Trust. Senator Dr. Floyd Morris stated: “The future People’s National Party (PNP) administration will undergo a thorough review of the regressive policy decision of removing the subsidy on interest rates for civil servants, police, teachers, persons with disabilities, persons over 55 years of age and others.”

This retrograde policy, according to Senator Morris, is “unconscionable and unjust because these groups have never been properly compensated or recognised by society for the tremendous work they do.” He also shared that offering them the subsidy on interest rate is just one legitimate means of demonstrating our appreciation for their work and efforts.

Dr Morris stated that this policy decision by the Government and Prime Minister Holness could not come at a more unfortunate time, as crime has spiralled out of control, and teachers have decided to leave the classroom for better options overseas.  According to Senator Morris, “when these incentives that are put in place to encourage and motivate civil servants, police, teachers and persons with disabilities are removed, we will continue to have the kinds of national crises that we have on our hands.”

The Opposition Spokesman assures these categories of NHT beneficiaries that when the people of Jamaica return the PNP administration to power, policy decisions will be made in the best interest of the people.
