JAMAICA | Empowering Jamaica's Unsung Heroines: Celebrate-Her-Awards Shine Spotlight on Women Transforming Communities

Kingston, Jamaica, April 2024 - In the heart of Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, a remarkable celebration unfolded on March 24, 2024, as the HerFlow Foundation hosted its annual Celebrate Her Awards.

This prestigious event, now a beacon of inspiration, honored fifteen extraordinary Jamaican women for their tireless efforts and significant contributions to their communities.

Established in 2019, the initiative shines a spotlight on the unsung heroines of Jamaica, recognizing their dedication to grassroots movements and community betterment on a platform that reverberates with their achievements.

At the core of this initiative is Shelly-Ann Weeks, the visionary founder of HerFlow Foundation, who, with unwavering determination, seeks to amplify the voices and work of Jamaican women making a difference at the community level.

"I know there are many Jamaican women who use their own resources to help children go to school, to feed the homeless, to support those who need it every day.

They just don’t get the recognition they deserve,” Weeks passionately expressed. Her mission is not only to honor these women but to elevate their work through support and resources, starting with the introduction of a grant for each award recipient.

This transformation of the HerFlow Unsung Shero Award into a grant program aims to fuel the continued impact of these women, fostering an environment where their efforts can flourish even more.

The event's main sponsor, Curves Sanitary Napkins, has been a steadfast supporter of the initiative since its inception. Tracy Wellington, the brand manager, underscored the brand's commitment to empowering Jamaican women, stating, "We are very happy with this partnership as we know that Jamaican women are integral to their communities and their effort should be recognized.”

This partnership and the planned evolution of the award into a grant program highlight a future where the support structures for these community heroes are as robust as their will to make a difference.

Among the honorees were Monique Jackson of the MJ Foundation, known for her educational initiatives, and Queen Simone, an Authentic Spiritual Speaker uplifting spirits and minds alike.

The awards also spotlighted Cheryl Simmonds for her relentless gender activism and Prudence Hall of The Prudential Foundation, whose philanthropic efforts have touched many lives. The  full list of the 2024 HerFlow Unsung Heroines are:

HerFlow AwardeesThe journey of these remarkable women does not end with the award; it is merely a milestone in their ongoing quest to transform their communities. As the Celebrate Her Awards look forward to its next ceremony in 2025, the legacy of the 2024 awardees will continue to inspire, reminding us of the profound impact one person can have in shaping a better future for all.

The 2024 Celebrate Her Awards ceremony served as a vibrant tapestry of stories, each thread woven from the unique experiences and contributions of the awardees. These women, from diverse backgrounds and fields, have been instrumental in creating sustainable changes within their communities.

Shelly-Ann Weeks, in discussing the inception of the HerFlow Unsung Shero Award, highlighted a critical gap the initiative aimed to fill: recognizing and encouraging women deeply entrenched in the thankless task of community service. “The HerFlow Unsung Shero Award was created to encourage the women in the trenches to continue their work.

Sometimes it can feel very thankless and difficult. I wanted to ensure that these outstanding women know that their efforts matter and they are creating meaningful impact,” Weeks stated, her voice imbued with passion and conviction. This acknowledgment serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for many women, affirming the value of their often-overlooked contributions.

The collaboration with Curves Sanitary Napkins and the transition towards a grant program underscore a broader vision of empowerment. This structural support not only acknowledges the hard work of these women but also ensures the sustainability and growth of their initiatives.

The future holds promising prospects for expanding this support, with plans to approach international funding agencies to finance this noble cause.

As we reflect on the Celebrate Her Awards and the stories of these formidable women, we are reminded of the profound impact of community service. These women have not only changed lives through their actions but have also paved the way for future generations to continue the legacy of service and advocacy.

The HerFlow Foundation, through its innovative approaches to recognition and support, is setting a new standard for how we honor and empower those who dedicate themselves to the betterment of society.

The Celebrate Her Awards is more than an annual event; it's a growing movement that brings to light the extraordinary contributions of Jamaican women to their communities. As we look ahead to the 2025 ceremony, the spirit of this year's awardees will undoubtedly inspire a new cadre of women to rise and contribute to the tapestry of change.

The journey of these women heroes continues to unfold, each step forward a testament to their indomitable spirit and the collective power of women united in the cause of community upliftment.
