Nobody is interested in agriculture. The PC banks are dead, [and] the commercial banks not giving any loans to us because nobody nuh business ‘bout agriculture,” Lenworth Fulton told journalists recently.Despite available avenues for agricultural loans through the Development Bank of Jamaica, the translation of these funds to farmers remains bottlenecked. A mere J$146M reached agriculture as loans in 2022, a stark reflection of the hesitancy and scarcity plaguing commercial banking channels. 

Fulton underscores the dissonance between the sector's investment needs and the government's paltry budget allocations, a scenario compounded by the mismanagement of donor funds earmarked for agriculture.

Seprod has the island’s largest dairy operation through its Serge Island Dairies subsidiary which processes millions of litres of fresh and flavoured milk at its plant in Bog Walk, St Catherine. It also has about 5,000 cows on its 2,000-acre Serge Island Farm in St Thomas according to its website, which lists annual production at 7 million litres of milk.The challenges and opportunities outlined by Fulton reflect a microcosm of the global agricultural landscape, where issues of financing, innovation, and sustainability converge.
