Brown | On 1 August 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act took legal effect across most of the British Empire, and even then Jamaica's freedmen served four more years of so-called apprenticeship before full freedom arrived in 1838. On 6 August 1962, this country put down the colonial yoke altogether. It took a slave war led by Sam Sharpe, an Act of Parliament at Westminster, and more than a century of struggle in between.
