GUYANA | Venezuela's Latest Provocation Demands United Guyanese Response, Says Walton Desir

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, January 10, 2025 - In a move that has sent shockwaves through the international community, Venezuela's announcement to elect a "Governor of Guayana Esequiba" marks a dangerous new chapter in its territorial aggression against Guyana.

This brazen violation of both the International Court of Justice's December 2023 binding order and the subsequent Argyle Agreement has drawn sharp criticism from the Opposition APNU+AFC Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amanza Walton Desir, who calls for immediate and decisive action.

"While our government has taken initial steps, the gravity of this moment demands more," declares Walton Desir. "We need leadership that matches the audacity of Venezuela's provocations with equal resolve and strategic foresight."

The Shadow Minister emphasizes that Guyana's response must be multi-pronged and proportionate to what she terms "not just an attack on Guyana, but an assault on the very principles of sovereignty that underpin global stability." 

Her proposed strategy calls for an immediate diplomatic offensive that would see Guyanese ambassadors and high commissioners mobilized across the globe, with special envoys dispatched to key capitals including Washington, London, and Brussels.

The plan advocates for emergency sessions within CARICOM, the Organisation of American States (OAS), and the United Nations, positioning Venezuela's aggression as a threat not just to Guyana but to the international legal order itself. 

"This is a moment," Walton Desir argues, "where we must rally both regional neighbors and global powers to collectively reaffirm the inviolability of international borders."

Beyond traditional diplomatic channels, the Shadow Minister's strategy calls for a sophisticated battle in the court of public opinion. 

Her proposal envisions partnerships with major international media outlets to maintain global awareness of Venezuela's illegal claims, while leveraging digital platforms to amplify the voices of Essequibo residents – proud Guyanese citizens whose lives and futures hang in the balance of this territorial dispute.

The Guyanese diaspora, often an untapped resource in international conflicts, features prominently in Walton Desir's strategic vision. 

Through virtual town halls and coordinated advocacy efforts, overseas Guyanese communities would be mobilized as grassroots ambassadors, carrying Guyana's message of sovereignty to their adopted homes across the globe.

However, the Shadow Minister's most pointed criticism centers on the fundamental prerequisite for any successful defense of Guyanese sovereignty: national unity. "Unity cannot be manufactured in a crisis," she warns. "It must be cultivated through consistent, fair treatment of all citizens, through respect for our rights, and through an environment where every Guyanese feels valued and included." 

Her call for a Border Security Commission – comprising government officials, opposition members, civil society stakeholders, and experts in international law and security – underscores the need for inclusive decision-making in this critical moment.

On the legal front, while reaffirming unwavering commitment to the International Court of Justice process, Walton Desir advocates for preparation of additional provisional measures should Venezuela's provocations escalate further. 

She frames Guyana's legal battle within a broader global context, where sovereign borders face increasing challenges and international norms weather sustained assault.

"This is not merely a government or opposition matter," the Shadow Minister concludes. "This is a national cause that demands we meet provocation with the full force of diplomacy, law, and solidarity. Guyana must not – and will not – be bullied into submission."
