Shericka Jackson wins 200m in 21.45 secs, at World Championships 2022

EUGENE, Oregon, July 21, 2022 - Jamaica’s prowess as world sprint champions was again on show this evening, as Shericka Jackson, running the second fastest time in history, blazed to a championship and national record of 21.45 secs to win the women’s 200m title at the World Championships 2022.  

Team-mate Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce won silver.

The Pocket Rocket, World 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce blasted off to another rocket start and placed the entire field under pressure entering the home straight. 

But her teammate, Shericka Jackson caught her compatriot with about 70m to go and then turned on the after-burners to put daylight between herself and the rest of the field, clocking the second-fastest time in the history of the event.

Fraser-Pryce held her form  to grab the silver medal in a season's best 21.81 seconds. 

Shericka told TVJ: “I’m feeling great. I came out and put on a show. The fastest woman alive, the national and championship record, I can’t complain,” she added.

Jackson, smased the championship record and sit only behind the long-standing world record of 21.34 secs set by Florence Griffith Joyner of the United States some 34 years ago.

She joins Griffith-Joyner as the only female athletes to run a sub-21.5 clocking in the 200 metres.

The bronze medal went to the defending champion Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain in 22.05.

Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah could only manage seventh in 22.39, while American champion and the second-fastest woman in the world this season, Abby Steiner was fifth in 22.26.
