GRENADA | Dickon Mitchell to be Grenada's New Prime Minister

 

MONTEGO BAY, JUNE 23, 2022 - Grenada's main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by 44year old attorney-at-law Dickon Mitchell, won today's general elections by capturing nine of the fifteen constituencies up for grabs.

He was declared the next prime minister from preliminary results of the general election from the Parliamentary Elections Office.

The NDC which lost the last two general elections 15-0, was able to amass some 51.81% of the registered votes under the astute guidance of its new leader who was able to capture the imagination of many young voters.

The ruling party, led by 75 year old prime minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, was only able to garner 47% of the votes. Dr.Mitchell who was seeking a third consecutive term at the polls, called the elections several months before they were due,and was only able to retain six of the fifteen seats he won in the 2018 elections.

Following his victory, the young Mitchell thanked the voters and his party workers for the victory, noting that the people of Grenada were now able to speak freely without fear, and held a motorcadewith his supporters dancing in the streets. The following appeared on the party's Facebook page:

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude and stand humbled before the Lord our God and you, the people of Grenada, Carriacou & Petite Martinique.  Thank you from the bottom of each and every one of our hearts. This victory is not ours, but yours."

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) last won a general election in 2008. In today's elections a total of 87,506 voters were on the list and asked to choose among the  forty-one individuals who were nominated as candidates for today's general elections in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

In the 2018 elections, the ruling NNP party captured all 15 seats with 58.91% of the votes and a voter turn out of 73.65%.
